Condition

Ligament and Tendon Injuries

Ligaments stabilise joints. Tendons move them. A tear or strain can feel like a pop, or like pain that refuses to settle with rest.

Common symptoms

  • A pop at the time of injury
  • Swelling within a few hours
  • A joint that feels loose or unreliable
  • Pain when loading a tendon — jumping, lifting or pushing off

When to seek medical attention

  • The joint gives way during daily activity
  • You cannot straighten or bend the joint fully
  • Pain that is not improving after a week of rest
  • You need a return-to-sport plan, not only pain relief

How a visit usually proceeds

  • Examination of stability and tendon function
  • MRI when the examination suggests a tear
  • Bracing and physiotherapy for many partial injuries
  • Reconstruction or repair when the structure will not recover on its own

This page cannot diagnose your problem. It is here so you know what to expect and when it is reasonable to be seen.
