Shoulder Health

Why does my shoulder hurt when I raise my arm?

Pain on raising the arm often comes from the rotator cuff, subacromial irritation, stiffness of the capsule, or referred pain from the neck. Sudden pain after a fall needs earlier review.

A familiar pattern

You reach for a cupboard, hang clothes, or press overhead and a sharp catch appears. Night pain on that side often follows. This pattern is common and usually treatable once the driver is clear.

Possible causes

Tendon irritation, early cuff tears, stiffness, and acromioclavicular joint pain can all limit elevation. The neck can also send pain to the shoulder.

When to seek care

See a doctor if you cannot lift the arm, pain followed a fall, night pain is regular, or symptoms last more than two weeks.

Treatment overview

Most people start with examination and physiotherapy. Injections are used selectively. Arthroscopy is reserved for structural problems that do not respond.

Questions

Is it frozen shoulder?+

Frozen shoulder causes global stiffness, not only pain in one arc of movement. Examination distinguishes it from cuff pain.
