Sports Injuries

When does a sports injury require medical attention?

Get assessed if you heard or felt a pop, cannot bear weight, swell quickly, lose movement, or if pain returns every time you train. Deformity, numbness or an open injury needs emergency care.

The first hour

Stop the activity. Protect the limb. Avoid testing the joint with more drills. Ice and elevation can help comfort; they do not replace a diagnosis.

Symptoms that should not be ignored

Rapid swelling, a joint that feels loose, inability to straighten the knee, or pain that is getting worse overnight are reasons to book sooner rather than later.

Possible causes

Sprains, partial tears, complete ligament injuries, tendon strains, and fractures can look similar on the field. The mechanism — how the body moved — is the first clue.

Treatment overview

Many injuries recover with a staged plan. Some need imaging. A smaller number need repair or reconstruction so you can trust the joint again.

Questions

Should I wait a week and see?+

Mild muscle soreness can wait a few days. A pop, collapse, or rapid swelling should not.
