Back Pain

Can back pain go away on its own?

Many simple back-pain episodes improve over days to a few weeks with sensible activity. Pain after trauma, pain with weakness or numbness, or pain that steadily worsens should be reviewed.

Most back pain is mechanical

Desk hours, sudden lifting, and deconditioning are common. Staying gently mobile is usually better than complete bed rest, unless a doctor has advised otherwise.

When it is not something to wait out

Pain after a fall, pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, progressive weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control needs urgent or emergency care.

Treatment overview

Reassurance, activity advice and physiotherapy help many people. Imaging is used when nerve symptoms or red flags are present.

Questions

Should I stop walking?+

Short, comfortable walks are often helpful. Stop if pain shoots down the leg with weakness or the pain is severe after injury.
